MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Authorities are investigating a fire in an apartment building on Hearthside Avenue in Cottage Grove, Minn.

Officials say the fire could be suspicious because it was in a mezzanine common area, not an apartment.

One of the residents said she woke up after a loud knock on her door.

“When I opened up my door, there’s like a lounge area with couches and when I opened up my door I saw one of the couches on fire,” said Vera Jackson.

Jackson ran outside but she didn’t see anyone else, so she started yelling for help and called 911.

Everyone at the apartment complex was able to get out safely and firefighters put the flames out in a matter of minutes.

The fire will continue to be investigated.
