Police: Gun Seized From Kindergarten Student At Benson School

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A kindergarten student came to school with a gun on Tuesday in Benson, according to the Swift County Sheriff's Office.

The Benson School District, working with the sheriff's office and the Benson Police Department, received a report of a firearm on the premises just after 8 a.m. at Northside Elementary School.

School officials said the handgun was brought to school by a kindergarten student. When other students became aware, they notified a teacher immediately.

School staff seized the firearm, and nobody was hurt in the incident.

Officials said there was no intent by the child to cause harm at the school and everyone is safe. The day continued on as normal at Northside Elementary School.

The child's parents have been interviewed. Authorities wouldn't say whether the gun belonged to one of them.

Benson is in west central Minnesota, about 140 miles from Minneapolis.
