Mental Health Group Seeks Security Hospital Change
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- A mental health advocacy group is calling for changes at Minnesota Security Hospital after an investigation found maltreatment occurred in the death of a patient earlier this year.
National Alliance on Mental Illness Minnesota says it's disturbed by the findings of the Department of Human Services investigation, which found the facility failed to provide necessary care and supervision to two patients.
One of those men is charged with murder, after allegedly stomping on the other patient's head as many as 30 times.
DHS fined the hospital $1,000 and extended the conditional status of the facility's license. As part of that, DHS has ordered changes, including hospital-wide training and one-on-one coaching on tools staffers can use to diffuse aggressive situations.
Mental health advocates say those changes don't go far enough.
