MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A Litchfield, Minn. man is being held on charges of second degree assault after he opened fire at a police officer in St. Cloud, Minn., according to police.
Benton County Sheriff’s Office said around 6 p.m. officers responded to a call from a man stating he was planning to open fire at a storage facility he was at in St. Cloud, Minn.
The man hung up on dispatchers before an address was obtained.
Several officers from different agencies searched local storage facilities until a man was located by a Benton County deputy.
According to police, a man, later identified as 43-year-old Christopher Knyphausen, was found in a chair at Airway Storage, located in the 3400 block of 2nd Street SE.
Upon seeing the officer, Knyphausen brandished what looked like a handgun and shot at the officer.
The officer then returned fire.
Knyphausen fled the scene in a vehicle, which officers located a short time later at the intersection of 29th Avenue SE and 3rd Street SE.
Police said Knyphausen was then taken into custody.
Neither Knyphausen or the officer involved in the shooting were injured.
Knyphausen is being held in the Benton County Jail and is expected to make his first court appearance Monday.
The officer involved has been put on paid administrative leave while the incident is being investigated.
