Plymouth Theater Gets 'Interstellar' Head Start
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Willow Creek Theatre in Plymouth has been all digital since 2012, but they haven't completely let go of film's history.
The theater will be pulling out its old 70 millimeter-format film projector next week to show Christopher Nolan's new film, "Interstellar," three days before competitors.
Willow Creek Theater hasn't used that format in 22 years, according to assistant manager Justin Ayd.
"Most theaters were just kind of pushing them out a door, into a trash can," Ayd said.
It's one of just six Minnesota theaters that will release the sci-fi film early.
"I was really excited, even just thinking about it now I'm getting goose bumps," he said. "When I found out we were gonna play 70, I was ecstatic."
But since using the projector requires a person to run it, employees will have to work out the kinks.
"We're definitely going to practice," Ayd said. "Testing everything, moving the digital out of place. We had to get a sound reader from the Heights Theater because we didn't have it."
Digital will still be the big seller. But for cinema buffs, film will always be the blueprint.
"There is kind of the risk we're going to forget about where film came from over a hundred years ago, so it's just keeping it alive which I think is the most important thing," Ayd said.
Tickets are already on sale for the early preview of the film. They do expect it to sell out.
