Sheriff: Hunter Stole Deer In Stearns County

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Authorities say a 34-year-old man was taken into custody in Stearns County on Sunday for stealing a deer from another hunter after not having success during Minnesota's opening weekend of hunting.

The Stearns County Sheriff's Office was called at about 1:20 p.m. Sunday to a group of hunters in Millwood Township after a deer carcass that had been hanging from a tree at a residence was stolen. When officers arrived, the group had several carcasses hanging from a tree and when they returned, one was missing.

The group told officers they saw a car leaving the area with a small buck tied to the roof of the car. The hunter that shot the deer tied a colored latex glove to one of the deer's legs, and the latex glove was visible on the deer on top of the car.

Officers spotted the car in the city of Upsala. The driver admitted to officers that he had been hunting and wasn't successful so when he saw the deer hanging from the tree, he cut one down and took it. The deer was returned to the holder of the tag.

The man was released from custody pending theft and other charges. The suspect has not yet been identified.
