Red Carpet Recap: We Day Notables Dish On MN Cold

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The stars aren't usually up for 7 a.m. red carpets, but luckily the crowd had no problem bringing up their energy. A group of students were chanting and cheering right from the very beginning.

The Band Perry put it perfectly: "Coffee and loud kids, that's all you need in the morning."

Wednesday's We Day red carpet featured speakers, We Day founders, actors, singers and even a poet. Each star walked into Xcel Energy Center to a crowd chanting their name and phones sent their way for selfies.

This was my first red carpet experience, but here are a few of my takeaways.

JR Martinez probably had the most energy next to the kids. He bounced right up to us, was incredibly inspirational with only a few short words, then bounced right on to the next interview.

I must say, The Band Perry are experts at selfies. They were grabbing every phone they could and would find a way to fit as many kids as possible into the shot. They also pushed past the boundaries to reach kids a little farther away, which I thought was awesome.

Martin Sheen always draws a crowd. He's a talker, but he's fun to listen to because he's so passionate. This was his 12th We Day and it's no secret why he keeps coming back every time.

Magic Johnson was easy to spot. He had a good foot on even the tallest person there! He was also so great with the kids; he kept going back to take more pictures and the kids loved it.

Jessica Tyler and Ana Golja from the show Degrassi loved their first trip to Minnesota, they said they had never met such wonderful people. They even found the upside to the cold -– an entire day at Mall of America.

Colbie Caillat barely made it to the red carpet after getting stuck in traffic, but many kids stuck around to welcome her and were not disappointed. She echoed what most said today: Minnesota is beautiful, but really, really cold.
