'CCO Meteorologists Don't Dig Groundhog Day

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – On Monday, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, declaring six more weeks of winter.

But the WCCO Weather Team forecasts milder conditions.

In fact, it's safe to say our meteorologists aren't the biggest fans of the forecasting rodent.

"I love how inaccurate he is," said Chris Shaffer, WCCO-TV's chief Meteorologist. "I find it fascinating that he sees his shadow when it's overcast with snow flurries in the area."

"It's bizarre," said Matt Brickman, meteorologist for WCCO This Morning. "The fact that we think a large rat that comes out of a hole is going to tell us what the weather is going to be, it's crazy."

While this first week of February is below average for temperatures, that doesn't mean Phil's forecast is looking accurate for Minnesota.

"It looks like even after a couple of cold days we're going to get back to that mild winter that we've had so far," Brickman said.

"This is nothing compared to what we dealt with last year," Shaffer said. "Then it gets warm, relatively mild for possibly a couple weeks."
