Man Crashes Truck Through Ice On Lake Minnetonka
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) - A 35-year-old man was rescued Wednesday night after going through the ice on Lake Minnetonka.
According to police, crews responded to the call around 8:30 p.m. of a truck through the ice on Lafayette Bay.
The man had been driving his pick-up truck across the ice after finishing an ice fishing expedition, just north of an area where signs were posted about thin ice.
Police said the man swam through the water, climbed on thin ice but was unable to help himself further.
Authorities are not sure how long he was there before a person who lived nearby heard his calls for help.
Four deputies with the Hennepin County Water Patrol had to lay across the ice to pull him out. They took him to shore on an ATV.
A dog inside the truck didn't make it.
The man was taken to North Memorial Hospital to be treated.
Lt. Kent Vnuk called the incident "dramatic" and "dangerous" and said that had the man not been heard calling for help, he would likely have been found in the morning under different circumstances.
