Confusion Reigns Over New Berkeley Soda Tax

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- They knew it was coming, but that didn't make a new soda tax in Berkeley, California any easier to swallow.

The goal of the law was to cut down on health problems linked to sugary soda. But since it went into effect at the beginning of the year, there is a lot of confusion about who's supposed to pay the 1 cent per ounce tax and on what.

The soda distributor is actually the one who is supposed to pay the tax, not the consumer.

At least one popular restaurant added a 22-cent tax to the bill for every fountain drink, whether fully sugared or diet.
