6-Year-Old Former Mayor Endorses Younger Brother For Office

DORSET, Minn. (WCCO) -- The younger brother of "America's cutest former Mayor" is following in his brother's footsteps.

Three-year-old James Tufts is throwing his hat into the race for Mayor of Dorset. You'll remember his older brother Robert served two terms in the small northwestern Minnesota town. James found a ringing endorsement in Bobby.

"Use your right hand, not your left hand, James," Robert Tufts said to his younger brother.

Former Mayor Robert Tufts offers his brother James some campaign advice.

"You say 'Welcome to Dorset please vote for me,'" Robert Tufts said.

"Welcome to Dorset, please vote for me," James Tufts said.

Bobby should know what works.

"To not talk poopy to people, to be nice," Robert Tufts said.

After all, the 6-year-old is a two-term Mayor of Dorset. And now the political heavyweight wants to pass on the torch.

"Because my mom said I have to, and I'm the older brother," Robert Tufts said. "I've been it before so I can help him do it."

James Tufts brings his own swagger. His campaign slogan: "Out with the ex, bring in the next." Then, he hit the campaign trail.

"Please vote for me," James Tufts said. "Welcome to Dorset," he said to another man.

A dollar buys a candidate their name in a jar. Each dollar gives James one more chance for his name to be drawn at random to become mayor. This candidate said if chosen, he'll highlight the best of Dorset.

The younger Tufts is a gentleman, who enjoys miniature golf as much as the next guy. At age 3, campaigning can be down-right exhausting.

"I'm just going to lay down and take a nap," James Tufts said.

But when you're looking to create a Tufts dynasty, you get right back on the horse.

If James is elected during Taste of Dorset on Sunday, Aug. 2, he will be the state's youngest mayor. He'll be 2 days younger than Bobby was when first elected.
