Crews Searching For Missing Man In Twin Cities Lake
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- As family members watched, Crews spent hours searching a Ramsey County lake Saturday after a man went into the water and wasn't seen again.
The search of Gervais Lake in Little Canada is being treated as a recovery effort, and the sheriffs office isn't saying much about the victim. Crews were on the water for hours but had to suspend the search after sundown, with plans to resume Sunday morning.
Authorities wouldn't say much about the identity of the man -- they only said that around 5:30 p.m., two adult men were trying to swim across the south side of the lake.
Eventually one man stopped swimming and noticed the other was missing. Someone called 911 and crews began searching the water, focusing on one area for much of the time.
Family or loved ones of the victim sat on a nearby bench, watching and waiting as a chaplain from the county tried to help in any way possible.
Authorities say this sort of thing can happen to anyone.
"Just use caution when you're in the water," Sgt. John Eastham said. "Unfortunately, any activity in and around a lake can turn tragic at moments notice."
Police wouldn't say much else about what happened, including whether alcohol was a factor in the incident. Crews will be back on the lake tomorrow, saying the beach area will be open, but the public will be kept away from areas that will be searched.
