Mike's Mix: Eastside Eat & Drink
Every Saturday, Mike Augustyniak picks up a new cocktail recipe from a local mixologist. This week, he visits Eastside Eat & Drink and muddles, strains and stirs like a pro.
Asterid
2oz Tattersall vodka
1 Tbsp blueberries*
8 mint leaves*
1/2 oz lime juice
1/2 oz simple syrup
In a shaker, muddle blueberries and mint leaves together with vodka. Add lime juice and simple syrup. Shake over ice, and strain into an iced Collins glass. Top with ginger beer.
Taste Test: If summer hasn't left your mindset yet try this mild, effervescent and refreshing cocktail. Gosling's (or Reed's) ginger beer and blueberries sweeten things up without getting out of hand.
Solarium
1 oz Tattersall gin
1 oz Amontillado Sherry
1 oz Aperol
1 oz Carpano Antica sweet vermouth
Stir all ingredients together over ice for 10 seconds. Strain and serve in a chilled coupe glass.
Taste Test: This is a cocktail that keeps on giving – flavor, that is. A hint of sweetness (lent by what bar manager Justin Teske calls 'arguably the best sweet vermouth in the world') gives way to richer salted-caramel/almond/nutmeg flavors after a few seconds on the palate. While some spirits, in some recipes, are interchangeable, don't mess with this one … or you won't end up with the intended flavor.
Eastside Eat & Drink will open in the Latitude45 apartment building on Sept. 29. Reservations will be accepted beginning on September 21st. For more information, keep an eye on their website.
