Preparations Well Underway With Ryder Cup At Hazeltine 1 Year Away

CHASKA, Minn. (WCCO) -- The countdown to the 2016 Ryder Cup is on.

The championship is being held at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska next year and is now just a year away.

"It's a great venue," U.S. Captain Davis Love III said. "Great [Twin] Cities and fans are incredible."

On Tuesday, the team captains met at Hazeltine to talk about what to expect next year. The captains called the Ryder Cup golf's "Super Bowl."

"It's a completely different animal," European Captain Darren Clarke said. "It's an experience that stays with you forever."

It's also an experience that takes an immense amount of work.

"We're getting ready and we're excited," 2016 Ryder Cup Championship Director Jeffrey Hintz said.

Hintz says planning for the tournament started several years ago. With a year to go, crews are focused on final details.

"We have two million square feet of temporary flooring, a lot of grandstands and LED boards to plan," Hintz said.

Course construction will begin in June of 2016.

"To see all the fans coming out and make the atmosphere as good as I'm sure it will be, it will make the Ryder Cup even more special," Clarke said.

The 2016 Ryder Cup runs Sept. 27 - Oct. 2 in 2016.
