48 Hours' Erin Moriarty Speaks At Innocence Project Gala

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A CBS reporter is in Minnesota looking into cases where people are in prison for crimes they didn't commit.

Erin Moriarty, correspondent for 48 Hours, was the keynote speaker at the Minnesota Innocence Project annual gala Thursday night.

The nonprofit group works to free people wrongfully convicted of crimes.

Moriarty said it's often hard to understand why someone would confess to something they didn't do.

"When they hear that somebody has confessed to a crime, most people will say, 'Well, that person had to do it because I wouldn't confess to something I didn't do.' But the longer I do these stories, the more I realize that there are a large number of people who could wrongfully confess, or be coerced into confessing," Moriarty said.

This event is the main fundraiser for the Innocence Project.

Lawyers take the cases for free.
