Report: Marijuana Use Doubles Among Adults

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Over the last decade, marijuana use has more than doubled in use among adults.

JAMA Psychiatry reported new findings Wednesday, showing that nearly 10 percent of adults in the U.S. used marijuana in 2013. That's up from four percent in 2002.

The research was done by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

It also found that 30 percent of users were classified as having a marijuana use disorder, meaning abuse or dependence on the drug.

The authors think knowing about the problems related to use is important to know for health care professionals, policy makers and the public.

Medical marijuana distribution centers opened in Minnesota this summer. In the first five days only 41 patients had signed up.
