St. Cloud State Wins 6-1 In UND's 1st Loss On The Road

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (AP) — St. Cloud State avenged its first home loss of the season on Saturday by routing North Dakota 6-1 in a National Collegiate Hockey Conference game.

Six different players scored goals for the seventh-ranked Huskies (9-3-0, 5-1-0), who scored three times in the second period to earn a split of the weekend series. North Dakota (10-2-2, 5-1-0), which lost for the first time on the road this season, won 4-3 on Friday.

"Nothing really changed for us; we just did the little things that could help us. It worked out and we got a little momentum," said Ethan Prow, who had one of St. Cloud State's goals.

Patrick Newell, Daniel Tedesco, Niklas Nevaleinen, David Morley and Jacob Benson scored. Prow and Nevaleinen scored power-play goals.

UND coach Bread Berry pointed to the second period as the turning point.

"We had a little bit of momentum there, but we needed a timely goal," Berry said. "We spent a lot of time killing penalties and they scored a couple of goals on that. It's one of those things where you can't let the game get away from you."

UND goalie Matt Hrynkiw was lifted in the second period and replaced by Cam Johnson. They combined for 15 saves.

"I told him it's for no other reason but to get a spark for our guys," Berry said.

That backfired as Johnson also gave up three goals.

Troy Stecher netted the Fighting Hawks' only goal against Charlie Lindgren, who turned away 28 shots.

The Huskies were 2-for-5 on the power play, while North Dakota went scoreless in three chances.

Newell got things started. He took a shot that deflected off the skate of UND defenseman Keaton Thompson and through the pads of Hrynkiw for a 1-0 lead at 14:11.

Tedesco scored on a rush at 5:40, taking a feed from Nathan Widman beating Hrynkiw crossing the slot.

At 8:46, Morley scored for a 3-0 lead. At 11:25, Johnson replaced Hrynkiw in nets for the Hawks.

North Dakota finally got on the board on Stecher's goal at 14:21. Stecher skated in front of the net and shot the puck through traffic for his third goal of the season.

But the Hawks lost the momentum when Trevor Olson was whistled for a major penalty, giving the Huskies a five-minute power play. That led to Nevaleinen's power-play goal before the second period ended with St. Cloud State up 4-1.
