Bloomington's Pete Docter Preps For Oscars

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- We might be thousands of miles away from Hollywood, but Minnesota does have its fair share of Oscar winners, including animator Pete Docter.

"Inside Out" was another hit film for Pixar, one about the different emotions that go through a young girl's head as her family moves from Minnesota to San Francisco.

The movie is up for two Academy Awards -- best original screenplay and best animated feature.

"Though it's an incredible honor to receive any of these awards, the film is the film. It doesn't change the film at all whether it wins an award," writer-director Docter said.

Docter is a Bloomington native who has been nominated for six Oscars so far, and won one for best animated feature for 2009's "Up."

Docter said the movie "Inside Out" does have some personal connections for him.

"My parents took a year-long sabbatical and moved to Denmark," Docter said.

He said he was roughly the same age as the protagonist of his film when he was "plunked down" with a whole group of new peers, though he didn't even speak the language.

"That just felt like a good metaphor for growing up," he said.

Docter says he's excited to attend the Oscars, and if he wins he'll plan on giving a shout out to all his family and friends back home.

Interestingly enough, Doctor's competition in best original screenplay includes "Bridge of Spies," which was co-written by fellow Minnesota natives Ethan and Joel Coen.
