5 Adults, 1 Baby Hurt In South Minneapolis Apartment Fire

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Authorities say five adults and an infant were hurt in a fire at a south Minneapolis apartment complex on Tuesday.

The Minneapolis Fire Department responded to the fire at about 3 p.m. on the 3200 block of Portland Ave. S. When firefighters arrived, fire was showing from the first floor and heavy fire was showing from the second floor.

Firefighters were able to knock down the blaze on the first floor and in the basement of the three-story structure.

All residents were able to get out of the building. Several had to jump from the second floor to get out. Fire officials said 15 to 20 residents were sheltered in a Metro Transit bus until they could get assistance from the American Red Cross.

Fire officials say five adults and one infant were transported to an area hospital for smoke inhalation.

Crews later returned to the scene after fire broke out on the building's second floor. The fire was completely extinguished just before 8 p.m.

There were no reports of any injuries to firefighters in the blaze. Crews determined the fire began in the hallway, however the cause is still under investigation.
