Kylie's Kids: Meet Sydney

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Marching band can take up most of your free time in high school. It takes a lot of dedication and loyalty, which is why Sydney continued to practice with the band even after getting diagnosed with cancer last year.

Even when she couldn't march, she still found a way to be on the field with her team.

It can be hard to spot someone in a marching band, but at 15 years old, Sydney is nearly 6 feet tall.

"I'm pretty sure I'm right here because I'm the tallest in the section," Sydney said.

She's been playing the alto-saxophone since 4th grade.

"I knew someone who played it when I was younger and I thought, 'I'll just play that,'" she said.

Now she's a sophomore at Rosemount High School and in competitive marching band, an extracurricular activity that can take up a large portion of her free time.

"Starting in July, it's four days a week for four hours," Sydney said.

But this season, she had to help on the front line. Last February Sydney was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, a type of bone cancer. It sidelined her marching band activities.

"I went into the doctor because I had some pain in my shoulder," said Sydney. "I missed pretty much all of the last trimester of freshman year."

She's recently finished treatment and just starting to get back to school full time. She's even already taking advanced placement courses, focusing on her studies for now until it's time to head back to marching band this summer.
