St. Cloud State Cutting 6 Sports Amid Budget Shortfalls

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Officials with St. Cloud State University said the school is cutting six sports and trimming rosters in at least four men's programs after concerns about the school's athletic budget.

Officials say sports being eliminated include men's and women's tennis, women's Nordic skiing, men's cross country and men's indoor/outdoor track and field. Along with sports being eliminated, rosters will be trimmed in football, baseball, men's swimming and diving and wrestling to achieve compliance with Title IX.

Athletic Director Heather Weems said in a statement that the moves will impact a total of about 80 student-athletes. The moves will also cut about $250,000 from the athletic budget.

As a result, St. Cloud State will go from 23 to 17 sports by the end of the 2015-16 school year.
