Legislative Session Kicks Off Amid Capitol Construction

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A one-of-a-kind legislative session got underway Tuesday.

In order for lawmakers to start the short 2016 session, construction on the Capitol building had to be stopped in a small area.

Currently, a full-fledged remodel of the building is underway.

In the House chamber, for instance, there is no running water and temporary restrooms are outside.

By order of the fire marshal, only 258 people are allowed inside the Capitol when the House meets.

This includes 134 lawmakers and up to 75 House staff members.

Matt Massman, the Minnesota administration commissioner, admits that it takes some creativity to make it all work.

"It will be certainly tight," he said. "We don't anticipate that there will be much opportunity for the public to be in the building."

The Senate will be meeting in a building nearby. There will be 49 members of the public allowed inside.

What's On The Table For This Session?

The big issues lawmakers face are tax cuts and transportation funding.

They are also expected to take on benefits for Iron Range workers and discuss switching the state from a caucus system to a primary system.

The session is slated to adjourn in late May.
