Woman Killed While Walking With Mother In St. Paul Identified

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- St. Paul police are investigating the first pedestrian death of the year after an SUV hit a mother and her 24-year-old daughter.

The incident occurred at 7:40 p.m. as they crossed West Kellogg near the History Center Tuesday.

Police say the SUV in the left lane didn't see them crossing. First responders performed CPR, but couldn't save the daughter. Her 64-year-old mother is expected to survive.

On Wednesday, police identified the daughter as Shelby Marqui Kokesch of Crystal.

The driver who hit them is cooperating. Police say it does not appear drugs or alcohol were a factor.

"What happened tonight is everybody's worst nightmare," Steve Linders of the St. Paul Police Department said. "A mother and daughter went out for an evening on the town and unfortunately one of them won't be coming home."

The accident falls on the same week St. Paul police are launching a year-long pedestrian safety campaign.

Starting Thursday, they will target some of the most dangerous intersections in the city.
