Blast Of Cold Air Could Bring 10 Inches Of Snow To Northern Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – After a week of spring-like weather, northern Minnesota could see up to 10 inches of snow as a blast of cold air washes over the state in the coming days.

WCCO-TV meteorologist Matt Brickman says the system that brought rain (and even lightening) to Minnesota on Tuesday will be overwhelmed by fast-moving, arctic air.

By midday Wednesday, communities across the state will experience strong winds out of the northwest, gusting up to 35 mph.

The cold air will turn rain to snow, especially in the northern part of the state. From the Iron Range to northwestern Wisconsin, 6-10 inches of snow are expected to fall over the next few days.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for the region, cautioning that heavy snow may affect travel Wednesday and overnight into Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Twin Cities metro area is expected to see mostly rain, although flakes may fall Wednesday night. Not much accumulation is expected.

Looking ahead, the weekend looks mostly dry, with high temperatures in the low 40s, which is about average for mid-March.
