Couple Found Dead In Shakopee; Suspect Later Kills Himself In Standoff
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A 40-year-old man suspected in a Shakopee double homicide killed himself after a standoff in Waseca Tuesday, according to Shakopee police.
Police say the executed a welfare check at a home on the 1100 block of Dakota Street close to midnight Monday.
There, they found a 68-year-old Terry Weimer and his 67-year-old girlfriend Renee Ahrens dead in residence's basement. Police said it appeared that blunt force trauma was a factor in both of their deaths. There was no forced entry or signs of burglary.
The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension was called to the scene, along with the Scott County Sheriff's Department. Investigators aren't exactly sure when the couple were killed, but responding officers found the Sunday paper sitting on the kitchen table when they arrived.
"My mom said if this ever happened, it would be the one son, which is exactly what happened" Renee Ahrens's son Troy said.
During the investigation, police say it was determined that a 2009 white Honda Accord registered to Renee Ahrens was missing. The vehicle was located earlier Tuesday morning, unoccupied in Waseca.
Police say the investigation quickly focused on Weimer's 40-year-old son, Adam, who lives in Waseca. When authorities went to his residence, he barricaded himself into a room with a firearm.
The standoff lasted several hours. Negotiators tried talking him into coming out and turning himself in, but he was found dead by a self-inflicted gunshot wound around noon.
Investigators say Adam Weimer has been arrested for DWI and assault in the past, but none of that was related to his father.
Shakopee Police Chief Jeff Tate says it's an isolated incident within a safe community and he can't remember any other domestic-type killings in recent memory.
Tate says the welfare check was requested by the female victim's family and that they told police where the key was.
Police are not looking for any other suspects.
