Prep Blog: This Weekend's Top Prep Match-Ups

We've had a beautiful week on the weather front as the sun has been out in full force and each day has gotten a little bit warmer. Some parts of Minnesota could even hit 90 degrees on Friday.

Warm, dry weather translates to an extremely busy week on the spring sports landscape. With the uncertainty that Mother Nature can bring in the spring, it's important for teams to take advantage of it when the conditions call for it.

The sun is expected to be out for most of the weekend, so the hectic spring sports schedule will continue with several big events and top match-ups on Friday and Saturday. Here's just a sample of some of the top games and events on the docket.

Friday Boys Baseball: Burnsville (10-2) at Eastview (9-2)

It's always a big game when Burnsville and Eastview square off, and the South Suburban Conference rivals will meet Friday afternoon in Apple Valley. Both programs are off to good starts this spring. Burnsville is 10-2 and looking for a bounce back game after having a six-game win streak snapped on Wednesday. The Lightning is 9- on the season and looking to avoid a losing skid off its own. Eastview lost to Lakeville North 9-6 in league play on Wednesday. Friday's game could have implications in both league play and section seedings.

Saturday Boys Tennis

Edina Invitational

If you're looking to get an early preview of the Boys State Tennis Tournament, Edina will be the place to be on Saturday. The Hornets are hosting the annual Edina Invitational. This year's field includes both No. 1-ranked teams in Blake in Class A and Shakopee in Class AA. The field also has strong programs in Minnetonka, Wayzata, East Ridge, Lakeville South and the host Edina.

Friday Boys Baseball: Woodbury (10-3) at East Ridge (5-6)

City bragging rights are on the line Friday afternoon in the east Twin Cities metro as East Ridge hosts No. 4-ranked Woodbury in Suburban East Conference baseball action. The Royals are 10-3 on the season and snapped a two-game losing streak on Wednesday with a 14-2 win over White Bear Lake. The Raptors have had an up-and-down season at 5-6, but snapped a three-game losing skid with a big 6-5 win over Mounds View on Wednesday. It should be a good battle between big rivals.

Friday Girls Softball: Winona (9-2) at Mankato West (11-0)

There's a big softball game in southern Minnesota Friday afternoon as Mankato West, unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in Class 3A, hosts 9-2 Winona in Big 9 Conference action. The Scarlets had a recent stretch of three straight shutout wins and have outscored opponents in their last five games by a combined 40-6. The Winhawks had won six straight games before a 2-0 loss to Rochester Mayo on Wednesday. Friday's game will have big implications in both the league title race and the section playoffs.

Tune into WCCO-TV's High School Sports Rally at about 10:20 p.m. Friday as Mike Max, Frank Vascellaro and David McCoy will have all the action covered.
