Iconic Photo Of Prince & Music Mural To Go Up For Auction

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- An iconic photo of a young Prince is going up for auction in Minneapolis.

The fourth-annual Auction at MCAD will feature photographer Robert Whitman's photo of Prince in front of the old Schmitt Music building in downtown Minneapolis.

The building still features a mural of a portion of the score of "Scarbo," the third movement of Maurice Ravel's "Gaspard de la Nuit."

WCCO told the story behind the mural in a Finding Minnesota piece in 2014.

Whitman, a former Minnesota resident, will be on hand at the auction to discuss the famous photo he took of the music legend in 1977 -- the same year he released his debut album, "For You."

Proceeds from the sale of Whitman's photo, and all other art sold at the auction, will benefit the MCAD Scholarship Fund.

The auction is Friday, May 20 at MCAD in south Minneapolis, and a preview of the auction is being held Wednesday, May 11 at The Minneapolis Club.
