Crosby-Ironton Student Allowed To Display Confederate Flag

CROSBY, Minn. (AP) — A Minnesota student suspended for refusing to remove a Confederate flag from his vehicle is back in school and will graduate with his class on Friday.

Cody Nelson was sent home Monday from Crosby-Ironton High School after refusing to remove the flag from the back window of his car. Principal Jim Christenson says the district prohibits the display of "objectionable" symbols. The flag is controversial because of its historical ties to segregation and slavery.

Nelson refused to remove the flag and was suspended. Dorene Nelson says her son was told he would not be allowed to participate in his commencement.

Dozens of students staged a peaceful protest Tuesday and the Nelsons met with school officials. Nelson will be allowed to keep his flag in his car, but must park it away from the view of other students.
