MNfusion: Local Designer Creates Gift For Florence + The Machine

The Dog Days are far from over as summer is just starting in Minnesota.

So, shake it out before grabbing at seat the Xcel Energy Center for Florence + The Machine. The British indie rockers will come through the Twin Cities are on June 2.

As is the tradition, the 'X' is offering up a special, local gift to Florence Welch and the group.

This time they reached out to former "Project Runway" star, and local designer, Christopher Straub for help and inspiration.

The team at the 'X' presented Straub with his next challenge – to take a Minnesota Wild jersey and create something unique for Welch.

So, Straub set out to make it work, and what he came up with was the Inside-Out Minnesota Wild Bear.

What was your inspiration for the piece that you created for Florence Welch?

Straub: I wanted to make something memorable to remind her of her time in Minnesota. I'm a big fan of Florence + The Machine so I know that she likes fashion and unique items. I'm honored to make something for her.

It seems like you really accomplished your goal! The Inside-Out Minnesota Wild Bear is incredibly unique. Describe a bit what the bear looks like.

Straub: I create one-of-a-kind designer teddy bears that are made with the seams on the outside to make them look like vintage toy bears. I made this particular bear from a Minnesota Wild's jersey and it looks fantastic! I bet all the player's wives are going want one, too!

How did this challenge compare to some of the challenges you encountered on "Project Runway?"

Straub: I love being challenged and find it part of the fun on "Runway." After the show I really love projects like this that get me to think outside of the box.

That's great! I bet it is just fun to do something that is out of the ordinary and experiment. So, will you ever sell pieces inspired by this gift?

Straub: Yeah, I make custom Inside-Out critters all the time for clients from new and vintage materials.  I'm sure once people see this bear they will imagine their own bear made from their favorite jersey.

I'm sure too! Which is why I'm so glad you will have some available. So, do you have a favorite Florence + The Machine song? If so, what is it?

Straub: TOTALLY!  "Shake It Out" is my fave!

Florence + The Machine are coming to the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul on June 2. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost between $30.50 and $80.50. To purchase tickets, or for more information, visit the Xcel Energy Center online. For more information on the Inside-Out critters, visit Christopher Straub online.
