State-Winning Shot Putter Pays Tribute To Late Mother

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The state high school spring tournaments are here, and out of that comes stories that can tug at your heart.

That's true for one young man who competed Friday in track and field, inspired by someone who was not there to watch him.

Clint Lockwood is a shotputter at Blaine High School. Before this season he lost his number one fan -- his mother. She died of pancreatic cancer at 51.

Two days ago, he received word he was awarded a scholarship at Boston University.

On Friday, he returned to the state meet where his mother saw him throw last year. He didn't just throw, he won it all: a state championship.

Asked what he would have said to his mother in the wake of his win, he said: "'Thank you. I love you, and thank you.' ... There's no word quite right for it other than that."
