MNfusion: 'First Comes Love' Exhibition Travels To Mpls.

In the wake of the tragedy in Orlando, many in Minnesota are seeking ways to heal.

A vigil held in Loring Park saw thousands come out to mourn the victims and find comfort in hymn, prayer and congregation.

Now, a new photography exhibit is offering yet another way to celebrate and support the LGBTQ community.

"First Comes Love: Portraits of Enduring LGBTQ Relationships" showcases LGBTQ couples from all ages, races and cultural backgrounds.

Photographer Barbara Proud is behind the project and developed the idea when she realized the strength of her own relationship. At the time, Proud and her wife Allison had been together for more than 20 years. This was longer than any other couple in her family.

Inspired, Proud wanted to show that gay relationships are in many ways no different than heterosexual ones, and emphasize just how powerful true love between any two people can be.

The collection is shot in black and white as a way to avoid stereotypes of LGBTQ culture. The black and white allows viewers to focus on the subject's faces, depth and how they connection to one another.

Couples that have been together for 10, 20, 40 and even 50 years are featured, as well as couple from different racial and cultural groups. Transgendered and questioning couples and individuals are also featured, as an effort to be inclusive to people from all walks of life.

Along with the portraits, the couples share their stories. Many of these include raising children, fighting for their relationship, transitioning or living with HIV/Aids or other medical issues.

Proud will be joined at the event with Margaret Chutich, Minnesota's first opening gay Supreme Court Justice.

She will also be photographing Jack Baker and Michael McConnell, the first gay couple to get a marriage license in Minnesota.

"First Comes Love: Portraits of Enduring LGBTQ Relationships" is showing at Dorsey & Whitney, located at 50 S. 6th Street in Suite 1500.

The exhibit will be open from 5 to 7 p.m.
