Vikings Want More Interceptions From Xavier Rhodes

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- They know he can play, they'd just like him to take a step.

Xavier Rhodes is a solid cornerback for the Minnesota Vikings, but he has registered just two career interceptions. That's part of what they want him to change in his game.

Rhodes is more comfortable these days. That comes with having played in the league three seasons.

"Just three years, did my time and earned stripes for the players so yeah I feel good," Rhodes said.

Xavier Rhodes is at a strange crossroads in his career. He's played well enough that you say he's on track and yet he's left enough on the field that you feel like he could be a lot better.

He has been steady, but not outstanding for a first round pick. His head coach won't go over the top on him, but sees progress.

"He's getting better. You know he's been really conscious about his hand placements and we've been working real hard on his technique," Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said. "I think he's starting to get the mentality of denying the ball from his guy."

Zimmer and Rhodes have a unique relationship, as if they understand each other at another level.

"Just he trusts me. He trusts everyone on the defense and I'm going to go out there and give it my all," Rhodes said.

What the coach really wants to see is not just a defender, but someone who can turn games with turnovers, namely interceptions.

"This is the first time that I've really seen him go after the football since I've been here," Zimmer said. "So there has been some plays where he really tries to intercept it."

That's Training Camp 2016 for Rhodes: You are good, now get better.

"For me it's just getting out there and just remain focused. Just play ball, don't overthink it and like I said, just play ball," Rhodes said.
