Minnesota Resident Dies In Virginia Hit-And-Run

ANNANDALE, Va. (AP) — Virginia State police have arrested a driver they say ran from the scene after a fatal crash on the Capital Beltway in Fairfax County.

Police said in a news release that officers found 23-year-old Nicholas Hammond of Fairfax, on foot, about two hours after the crash.

Authorities say the collision occurred early Monday near the Little River Turnpike exit in Annandale. Police say Hammond was driving a car that rear-ended another car, sending it into the adjacent express lanes, where it hit a barrier.

Officers say there were five people in the car that was hit. A passenger, 52-year-old Elmi Suada of Minnesota, died at the scene. The others were treated and released.

Hammond is charged with manslaughter, DUI and hit-and-run. It is not known if he has a lawyer.
