Rochester Home Badly Damaged In Fire

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A home was heavily damaged after a fire in Rochester Friday night, but crews were able to save another house just six feet away.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at about 6:30 p.m. on the 900 block of 14th Ave. SW. Authorities say the residence was a single family residence with two occupants. One person was sleeping and another was cooking when the fire started.

Fire officials say oil was heating on the stove, and an occupant left the kitchen for a period of time. The oil reached ignition temperature and caught fire. When the occupant returned, the kitchen was engulfed and fire quickly spread to the rest of the main floor of the house.

Flames were shooting out a window on the south and west side of the home. Firefighters were able to put the flames out quickly and used a special foam to prevent the fire from spreading to another home just feet away.

Both occupants of the home were able to get out safely, but the home suffered extensive smoke and flame damage. Authorities say one house cat died in the fire.
