Twin Cities Couple Shares Nerves, Laughs After Gender Reveal Mishap

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A Twin Cities couple got a big surprise during their baby's gender reveal party, but it wasn't the outcome they expected.  In fact, the "reveal" left them more confused than ever.

Two weeks ago, Joe and Leela Krummel hosted a party for their friends and family to share in their excitement as they learned the sex of their baby.

"I think it's a great way to share the news with everyone other than calling up people or posting something online," said Leela Krummel.

Before a gender reveal party, a couple doesn't learn the sex of the baby. Instead, an ultrasound technician writes the gender in a sealed card or envelope. The couple then figures out how they want the surprise. Popular reveals include having a cake baked or opening a box of balloons with the corresponding colors for a boy or girl.

The Krummels went with the balloon reveal and took their card to a local party store.

"We both left feeling nervous. It was around Halloween and the store was super busy," said Joe Krummel. "Just from the beginning we both had an uneasy feeling about it."

When party time finally came, Joe and Leela opened their box and several multi-colored balloons floated to the surface.

"When we saw the assorted balloons, not pink or blue, we were first in shock and then realized, uh oh, and disappointment," Leela said.

It seemed the party store got a bit confused on color scheme while packing the sacred information.

"There was just a wave of emotions in like a minute," Joe said.

At some point parents learn, with children, things don't always go as planned.

"One of my close friends said this is the first time you will have no idea what's going on, so, get ready for it," Joe said.

Joe and Leela eventually found the sealed card stuffed in the box.  A friend repacked the box with the properly colored balloons.

"We're having a boy," Leela said.

The Krummel's got their answer along with a new understanding that, sometimes, the unexpected moments make the greatest memories.

"After everything was said and done we know it was hilarious," Leela said.

The Krummel's gender reveal fail is giving people around the world a pretty good laugh. More than a million people have watched their video in the last week. Baby Krummel is due in May of next year.
