Man Indicted For Murder In Burnsville Dollar Tree Shooting

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 27-year-old South St. Paul man has been indicted by a grand jury for murder in a November fatal shooting a Dollar Tree Store in Burnsville.

Grant David Hendrickson was charged with multiple crimes in the death of 69-year-old Donald Joseph Hortsch of Rosemount and the attempted murder of a 27-year-old man on Nov. 7. Hendrickson faces seven total charges in the incident. They include first-degree and second-degree murder, attempted first and second-degree murder, first and second-degree assault and possession of a pistol by a prohibited person.

The incident happened just after noon on Nov. 7. Authorities say Hendrickson walked into the Dollar Tree Store and shot two men. He was caught nearby minutes later, with the help of witnesses.

Authorities say witnesses inside the store saw Hendrickson shoot the two men in the store, then leave.

According to the charges, two brothers working at the store encountered a woman at the store that day. The woman was Hendrickson's girlfriend. The two brothers and their parents had recently been evicted from an apartment in Burnsville, and they believed Hendrickson's girlfriend was responsible after calling police several times on noise complaints.

The complaint states during the woman's altercation with one of the brothers working at the store, he referred to Hendrickson as a sex offender. She had no knowledge of that, became angry and talked with Hendrickson after he got out of class at St. Paul College that morning.

The complaint states Hendrickson entered the store to talk to one of the brothers, and they had an argument outside the store. Hendrickson told the man, "You don't know me and I will kill you." Hendrickson then started pushing the man, who punched Hendrickson in the face three times.

According to the complaint, Hendrickson was escorted out of the store before he re-entered and started shooting.

The complaint states Hendrickson then called his girlfriend to tell her he had just shot two people. He told her he was being jumped by five people and had no choice but to shoot.

Hendrickson has a previous conviction for first-degree criminal sexual conduct dating back to September of 2010.

If convicted on all charges, he faces life in prison.
