2-Year-Old Injured In Wrong Way Crash Dies In Hospital

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- According to family, a third person has died from a weekend crash caused by a wrong way driver.

Two-year-old Payton Bailey passed away at the hospital.

Payton's mother, Dylan, and grandmother, Dawn Chiodo, were killed in the crash Friday night.

Their jeep was traveling down Highway 5 entering 494, when the driver of another vehicle crashed into them.

"I was the one that found Payton," said Scott Ferrozzo, who tried to rescue the victims of the crash.

Ferrozzo has no relation to 2-year-old Payton Bailey but the little boy sure feels like his family.

"I'll always feel a connection to Payton," Ferrozzo said.

That connection came out of a horrific moment last Friday when a wrong way driver caused a crash that killed Payton's mom and grandmother. Ferrozzo and a friend were passing by seconds after the crash occurred.  They immediately jumped out to help the injured in the jeep.

"It's a tough situation that this family has been put in for a act of negligence and within seconds this whole family's been wiped out," Ferrozzo said.

For the last seven days, Ferrozzo has shared in the family's grief and worry.

Grief for the indescribable loss of two family members taken in an instant.

They worried for the 2-year-old who spent days fighting for his life in the hospital leaving Payton's father, Phillip, with life's most difficult decision.

"Philip wanted everybody to know that he's surviving this knowing that his son is going to give eight other children a chance at life," Ferrozzo said.

Loved ones now grieve three generations of family taken too soon and for Ferrozzo, grief is mixed with the regret of what could have been.

"I held Dylan for the longest time and I was telling her that everything was going to be fine. I was telling her that everybody was where they needed to be right now, and unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be, it makes me ill," he said.

Funerals for the three family members will be held on Saturday.  If you want to help, click here.
