State Patrol: More Than 700 Crashes, 1,300 Spin Outs During Snowstorm

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Though the winter storm that hit Minnesota over the last two days was not as intense as expected, the roads were still plenty dangerous.

According to Minnesota State Patrol, between 1 a.m. Friday and 10:45 a.m. Saturday, there were 736 crashes statewide. Sixty-six people were injured, two were seriously injured and one crash was fatal. Additionally, over 1,300 vehicles spun out.

In the metro, State Patrol reports 458 crashes, with 41 injuries and no fatalities, and 316 spin outs.

State Patrol said Friday that if you do crash, you should stay in your vehicle.

"It's much safer there," Lt. Robert Zak said. "If you spun out on a curve or hill, because you're going, maybe going too fast for conditions, the likelihood there's somebody that might be coming up behind you doing the same thing and we want you to be inside your vehicle where you have that crumple zone, where you have air bags, you have seat belts, you have added protection. If you're outside that vehicle you don't have any of that."
