Xcel Energy supports the Mississippi Park Connection through its youth programs the Big River Journey. This is the park’s flagship education program and has provided 75,000 students with on-river learning experiences over two decades. Big River Journey focuses on students grades 3-5, the age when behavior is being shaped through interdisciplinary educational experiences, including learning about our responsibility in caring for the environment. The primary goal of Big River Journey is to create a foundation for lifelong learning and stewardship of the Mississippi River and its watershed in school children. The field trip program brings students to the Mississippi River to explore, enjoy, and learn about the river, and begin a personal connection. Big River Journey program components include teacher workshops and a standards-based, STEM oriented curriculum, classroom and service learning activities, and the riverboat field trip, which is often the culmination of hard work done in the classroom. The trips are designed for up to 120 students each, and feature staffed learning stations with hands-on activities on topics such as aquatic insects, water quality, river geology, ecosystems, river boats and piloting, archaeology, and native cultures.
