Authorities in northern Minnesota are investigating after a child died Thursday morning in Bemidji. Police, Bemidji Ambulance and the Bemidji Fire Department responded to a medical call at about 9:57 a.m. Wednesday on the 2700 block of Birchmont Drive NE.

Teen Allegedly Starts Forest Fire Because Mosquitoes Were Bugging Him

A Cass County teen has been charged with felony wildlife arson after intentionally setting a blaze Wednesday that damaged over 70 acres and endangered several homes. Anthony James Wittner, 17, told investigators he started a forest fire because mosquitoes were bothering him, according to the Cass County Attorney’s Office.

Suspect In Custody Following 10-Mile Chase, Shooting

A suspect is in custody in Hubbard County after a 10-mile pursuit ended in a two police officers firing their guns. Ty Justin Andree, 23, of Bemidji was taken into custody Friday night after fleeing Becker County deputies who attempted to stop him when they identified Andree’s car as one suspected in the theft from a Detroit Lakes liquor store.

Attorney Weighs In On Arrest In Death Of Bemidji Girl

Charges are expected Monday against a 22-year-old woman in Bemidji, who was arrested in connection with the death of her 6-year-old cousin. Rachel Downer is facing charges of manslaughter and felony neglect of a child in the death of Mercedes Mayfield. Downer was watching her cousin last month when the little girl was found frozen to death at the entrance of her apartment. The temperature at the time was minus 27.

Restaurant and resort owners were at the Capitol Monday, lobbying against the proposed increase in the minimum wage. They say most servers already make well over the minimum wage when you factor in tips. Some said the increase would force them to lay off employees and raise prices, and they are trying to get lawmakers to carve out exceptions to the current proposed increase.

Police: 5 Arrested For Stealing From Cars In Church Parking Lot

Officers have arrested multiple people in connection to recent thefts in Bemidji, authorities said Tuesday. The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office says five suspects were arrested following thefts Sunday from cars in the parking lot of Calvary Lutheran Church. Investigators also allege the suspects robbed local businesses and retailers.

Flames Engulf Bible School Dining Hall Near Bemidji

More than 30 firefighters from multiple fire departments used about 15,000 gallons of water battling flames Wednesday afternoon at a Bible school dining hall in central Minnesota, officials say. Chief David Hoefer of the Bemidji Fire Department said the fire on the Oak Hills Bible College campus caused no injuries and started just before 3:30 p.m. Staff at the school reported smoke coming from the dining hall, located on Oak Hills Road Southwest.
