Voyageurs National Park is going to start taking reservations and charging fees for campsites. Campsites and houseboat sites at the park on Minnesota’s northern border had been first-come, first-served, and the only access is by boat.
An increase in bear activity has caused officials to close part of a national park in northwestern Wisconsin for up to two weeks. Sand Island, one of the Apostle Islands, was closed to overnight camping on Monday because of bears entering campsites on the hunt for human food.
Voyageurs National Park officials will hold a public meeting in the Twin Cities this weekend to discuss their proposal to launch a campsite reservation system and start charging fees for overnight stays.
