At first, the people chanted for quarterback Christian Ponder. They wanted him to replace Donovan McNabb as a rookie, but did he play too soon for his own good?
Christian Ponder’s descent from first-round draft pick to third-string quarterback has been formalized, with the release of the first depth chart of the season by the Minnesota Vikings. After losing the starting job to Matt Cassel last year and watching the team draft Teddy Bridgewater, Ponder entered the final year of his rookie contract in lame-duck mode, realizing the likelihood he’ll soon be playing elsewhere.
Matt Cassel has started the Minnesota Vikings training camp as the starting quarterback. As coach Mike Zimmer said again Friday, prior to the first full practice, that does not mean Cassel will automatically keep the same status for the season opener.

Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman says he can’t afford to let his spotty history when it comes to quarterbacks deter him from taking one in the first round this year if he believes the right player is available. Spielman addressed the media on Tuesday, two days before the first round of the NFL draft.
New Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer has taken a methodical approach to evaluating the team’s muddled quarterback situation, refusing to make any concrete statements about the position until he had time to do his homework and come to a decision.
The Minnesota Vikings already had a lot of work to do with their quarterback situation this offseason. The list just got longer. Matt Cassel will void the 2014 option on his contract and become a free agent, a person familiar with his decision told The Associated Press on Wednesday.
The Minnesota Vikings had higher expectations than the 5-10-1 record the team finished with in the 2013 season. The Vikings pass defense was abysmal in 2013 with five game-tying or game-winning scores in the final minute of the game. The team used three starting quarterbacks, including Christian Ponder and Matt Cassel for small stretches twice. The team fired head coach Leslie Frazier very early Monday morning.
It was another eventful year in local sports with three local professional teams making the playoffs, a high profile coach getting dismissed and a football team having a turnaround season.
Greg Jennings wanted to make sure he knew what he was getting into before he joined the Minnesota Vikings, so he sat down and studied film of Christian Ponder.
The Minnesota Vikings play in a division that has been up for grabs all season long. They’ve had four losses — and a tie — by four points or less. So many factors led to the Vikings (4-9-1) being on the outside looking in as the season winds down. But one appears to stick out more than any other.
The Minnesota Vikings have ruled quarterback Christian Ponder out for Sunday’s game at Baltimore. Coach Leslie Frazier said Friday that Ponder had yet to pass all of his post-concussion tests. So Ponder will not suit up against the Ravens, with Matt Cassel starting and Josh Freeman backing him up.
The Minnesota Vikings will not have quarterback Christian Ponder for Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens due to the concussion suffered in the win over the Chicago Bears. Matt Cassel will take over as the starter with Josh Freeman serving as his backup. The Vikings had five players listed as non-participants, four as limited participants and four as full participants at Thursday’s practice.

Matt Cassel stepped on the platform, grasped the podium with both hands, looked around and grinned.
Another week has brought another quarterback quandary for the Minnesota Vikings. Matt Cassel played well enough in relief of Christian Ponder to take over the job. Ponder left Sunday’s win over Chicago with a concussion.
The Minnesota Vikings seemingly defeated the Chicago Bears, then had a chance to lose and finally won on a 34-yard field goal by Blair Walsh. Adrian Peterson ran for 211 yards to help the Vikings get the 23-20 victory Sunday at Mall of America Field.
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder has been taken to the locker room under evaluation for concussion symptoms. Ponder took a hit to the head late in the second quarter Sunday against Chicago during a rushed third-down throw.
The last time the Minnesota Vikings played the Chicago Bears, they were well on their way to an important division victory on the road. Until, that is, Jay Cutler, ruined their day. The Vikings led by six points with 3:15 to play at Soldier Field on Sept. 15. Then Cutler drove the Bears 66 yards, finishing the drive with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Martellus Bennett with 10 seconds to win it. Cutler will not play in the rematch Sunday at the Metrodome because of a high left ankle sprain. A reason for the Vikings to celebrate? Well, they don’t exactly have fond memories of facing backup quarterback Josh McCown, either. Back in 2003, McCown was making his third career start for the lowly Arizona Cardinals in the season finale. The 9-6 Vikings need a win over the 3-12 Cards to clinch the NFC North.
The Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers played to a 26-26 tie at Lambeau Field Sunday. The Vikings turned an early seven-point deficit into a 16-point lead early in the fourth quarter. The Packers scored 16 straight points in the fourth quarter, including 10 in the final four minutes to force overtime. Both teams kicked a field goal on their opening drive of overtime and traded punts before time ran out.
Adrian Peterson is dealing with a groin injury and will not miss a game, even if asked to do so. The Minnesota Vikings also can expect to have wide receiver Greg Jennings in the lineup when it travels to Green Bay to take on the Packers. Harrison Smith is on the mend and expects to begin practicing next week. The Vikings listed four players as non-participants, seven as limited participants and three as full participants in Thursday’s practice.
The quarterback carousel in Minnesota is staying put for another week. Christian Ponder will be the starter at Green Bay.
The Minnesota Vikings hope to have a decision on their starting quarterback when practices begin on Wednesday. Josh Freeman is expected to be named the starter after Christian Ponder’s latest bad outing. The Vikings lost cornerback Josh Robinson and center John Sullivan during the loss to the Seattle Seahawks, but wide receiver Greg Childs is expected to return to practice for the first time since training camp in 2012.
The quarterback merry-go-round in Minnesota is on the verge of spinning again. Christian Ponder was pulled for Matt Cassel early in the fourth quarter on Sunday at Seattle, and coach Leslie Frazier didn’t convey much hope on Monday for Ponder to keep the job this week.
What’s next for the Vikings?
