TV Host Fights Demolition Of 1893 House

The future of a 120-year-old house in South Minneapolis will be decided on Friday by the Minneapolis City Council. The home at 2320 Colfax Avenue south was built by master builder Theron Potter Healy in 1893. It’s now being used a 15-unit rooming house.

If the Metrodome’s demolition was like a Vikings football game, we’d be in the final few minutes of the last quarter. A piece of St. Paul history came down Sunday morning in dramatic fashion. Demolition crews brought down a towering smokestack as part of the ongoing demolition of the Island Station Power plant. After standing over the Mississippi riverfront for more than 90 years, the 280-foot smokestack crumbled in a matter of seconds.

Vikings Stadium Construction Off To Swift Start

The big dig is on. Construction on a new Vikings stadium is well underway. In fact, it’s going so fast that the demolition of the old Dome could happen soon. Mortenson Construction Company, the builder of the new stadium, has already removed 100,000 tons of dirt, creating a vast hole that is essentially a foundation for the new facility. Workers are putting in the pilings to secure the outer perimeter. All of this is in preparation for the last Dome event: the Vikings game against the Lions on Dec. 29.

The nearly century-long history of the Ford Motor Co. plant in St. Paul will soon be erased. Demolition starts Monday and is expected to last into next year. Decommissioning has already been underway for some time, with equipment being shipped to other Ford sites or recycled.
