An 8-year-old girl killed by a pack of dogs on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation wanted to be a veterinarian and dreamed of one day creating a shelter for the dogs that roam the reservation, her parents say.

Pet Blog: Mpls. Kennel Club Set For 81st Dog Show

Over 1,200 dogs will compete this weekend in Shakopee in the 2014 Minneapolis Kennel Club All-Breed Dog Show. The competition will be held at Canterbury Park’s new Event and Expo Center on Saturday and Sunday. Organizers say handlers from around the country will be there, including 50 youngsters between the ages of 9 and 17 who will participate in the junior showmanship event.

Pet Blog: Rally Aims To End Dog Shootings By Police

The group “Freeze Don’t Shoot” plans to hold a rally at every state capitol Saturday to highlight officer-involved shootings of family pets. The Minnesota chapter was formed in July. Julie Whalen, the administrator of the Minnesota Facebook page, says the local group has about 130 members, and about 50 plan to attend Saturday afternoon’s rally in St. Paul to address what they call an “epidemic” of shootings.
