Three people have been charged with using other people’s food stamps to purchase groceries and ship them to Africa at a profit. According to the criminal complaints, the group operating the scheme bought up EBT cards from those on SNAP, usually buying them from people at homeless shelters.
Republicans are calling it one way to stop welfare fraud: It’s a bill requiring benefit cards for welfare recipients to include Photo ID.
The bill will also double the waiting period from 30 to 60 days before a new resident gets welfare.
Republican legislators think they have a way to keep Minnesotans on welfare from spending their benefits on booze, smokes and lottery tickets: They’d keep them from taking more than $20 in benefits in cash per month.
