Look closely on dozens of Twin Cities menus and you’ll find the fish from Star Prairie Trout Farm — just 45 minutes from our downtowns. Besides their commercial fishing operation, they have ponds where anyone can fish. My morning show co-anchor, Jamie Yuccas, had more success than I did at fishing.

Good Question: Why Does MN Only Allow One Fishing Line In The Water?

This time of year is prime fishing time. It’s a good time to get out on the water, drop a line in and hopefully catch some walleye. Our border states allow people to fish with more than one line at a time. So why does Minnesota only allow one line in the water?

Harsh Winter Kills Thousands Of Fish On Grand Lake

Last winter’s heavy snowfall is partly to blame for a fish kill that took out tens of thousands of walleye, bass, northern pike and other species on Grand Lake near Duluth. Dan Wilfond, Department of Natural Resources fisheries specialist for the Duluth area, said even bullhead were among the species affected — an indicator that the fish kill was fairly severe. He estimates roughly 35,000 fish died.

DNR Investigates Fish Kill In Suburban Lake

Minnesota officials on Monday were trying to determine what killed thousands of fish in Lake Owasso. There’s no evidence of a chemical spill or toxins, and tests show that oxygen levels are normal, said Harland Hiemstra, a spokesman for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Lake Owasso lies within Shoreview and Roseville in the northern St. Paul suburbs. The lake is managed primarily for muskies, he said. Lake resident Les Hassler said he’s counted thousands of dead fish since it froze over last Tuesday. Hundreds of fish could be seen belly-up inches beneath the new ice on Sunday.
