Bemidji Woman Found Incompetent In Freezing Death

A Bemidji woman who allegedly allowed her 6-year-old cousin to freeze to death has been found incompetent to stand trial. Twenty-two-year-old Rachel Stacey Downer was charged with manslaughter in the death of Mercedes Mayfield.

Temperatures Well Below Zero Return To Minnesota

Blowing snow and icy roads are causing hazardous travel conditions in Minnesota as another cold snap moves in. Temperatures will dip into the negative teens and 20s overnight and into Monday, prompting officials to warn state residents to stay inside.

Elderly Woman Found Dead In Madison, Wis. Cold

Police in Barron are investigating the death of an elderly woman who apparently left her assisted living facility and died in the cold. Police Chief Byron Miller said in a statement dispatchers received a call about 4:45 a.m. Wednesday from Monroe Manor, an assisted living facility, reporting 76-year-old Juanita Toews had left the building.

It looks like we will take our first trip below freezing Monday night in Minneapolis. Last year we accomplished that feat on Oct. 7, when we bottomed out at 28 degrees. We are behind schedule, and I’m sure allergy sufferers will rejoice as we spend the next few nights below freezing, killing most vegetation that messes with our noses.

Record Cold In Parts Of Minnesota

The National Weather Service says International Falls reported a low of 30 degrees, a record low for the date. The previous record of 32 degrees was reached three times, most recently in 2009. Crane Lake reported a morning low of 28.

Winter Already A Lost Season For Many Minnesotans

It could be a rare sub-zero night Friday. The WCCO weather team says we’ve dipped into those negative digits only four times this year, compared to the usual 30 or so days at or below zero. And, we’ve only seen a single digit high temperature one day this winter.
