This year’s winter lake trip – which took Frank Vascellaro and Chris Shaffer all over Minnesota and western Wisconsin – will wrap up in the southern Minnesota town of Waseca. The guys arrived Thursday in the town, which is about an hour-and-a-half drive southwest of the Twin Cities.
We’re sharing the love this summer and getting more of the WCCO gang on the road! That’s right, instead of Goin’ to the Lake for just a couple weeks this summer, we’re expanding. Big time! WCCO will be hitting the lake every week from Memorial Day until the beginning of the State Fair.
Frank and Chris had great fun during their second day in Dresser, Wis. on Friday. The guys headed to Trollhaugen Outdoor Recreation Area, which has activities for every age and ability. Frank Vascellaro and Chris Shaffer are braving the frigid weather and getting out to Minnesota’s lovely, ice-covered lakes every Thursday and Friday until the middle of February. On Jan. 17, the duo headed out to the Mille Lacs town of Wahkon, which is about 90 miles north of the Twin Cities. Frank and Chris say Wahkon reminds them a little of Dorset, which they visited last spring, because of its tiny population and growing reputation for food. There are four restaurants all on about a one-block stretch!
On Jan. 16, the duo headed out to Lake Mille Lacs, which is about 100 miles north of the Twin Cities. After the drive up, the two found some shelter from the windy weather at Johnson’s Portside Bait and Liquor store. They said the wind was so strong you couldn’t even see the fish houses that dot the ice on Minnesota’s second largest in-land lake.
We’ve scoured the map and narrowed down the choices for this year’s Goin’ To The (Frozen) Lake trip!
Can you find a ‘Goin’ To The Lake’ experience at the fair? Wednesday was also Read and Ride Day at the Great Minnesota Get-Together. And to celebrate literacy in our state, we had a prickly little Internet celebrity stop by our fair booth.
