One person is dead after being hit by a Burlington Northern train early Saturday morning in Independence, according to the West Hennepin Public Safety Department. The accident happened at 1:15 a.m. just off Highway 12 at northbound County Road 92. Authorities say the train was heading west when the northbound vehicle went around the flashing gates and was struck.

Aaron Howe of Independence tried to fend off snowballs thrown by his two children. “It’s been fantastic. We grilled out last night, and it’s kind of a nice warm spell to have in Minnesota after the holidays,” Howe said.
