Local veterans have places 23 pairs of boots on the Capitol steps to symbolize the number of active duty troops and veterans who take their lives each day.

He’s Jeremy Gitzlaff, of Pewaukee, Wisconsin, an Iraq War veteran and former Marine Corps reservist. He donated bone marrow last year that’s credited with saving the North Branch man’s life from leukemia. They began texting this summer.
July’s featured veteran is Charlie Roberts, who was a Corporal in the Marine Corps, serving with 3rd Recon Battalion in Okinawa, Japan where he conducted special operations throughout Asia.
A Coon Rapids man who stuck up for a little boy almost became a victim himself. Jamie Godlewski says he saw a father spanking his child too hard and stepped in. “I just assumed he would have stopped and left. I didn’t think it would escalate to anything like that at all,” he said.
